Summary

In anticipation of a coming nuclear apocalypse， Mole has converted a huge underground quarry into an 'ark'。 While searching for his crew， he falls for the tricks of a wily insect dealer and his friends。 In the surreal drama that ensues， the ark is invaded by first a gang of youths and then a sinister group of elderly people， before Mole himself becomes trapped in the ark's central piece of equipment - a giant toilet powerful enough to flush almost anything out to sea 。 。 。

3。5This was my first Kōbō Abe and it was a very surreal。 A recluse called Mole who lives underground decides he needs some crew for his 'ship' which can become self supporting once the nuclear apocalypse happens。 From the very start he struggles to control what happens， who his crew might be， what they think should happen and what actually happens。 It felt like very little happened for a lot of the book， a number of characters tell strange anecdotes that go on for pages and then suddenly the cha 3。5This was my first Kōbō Abe and it was a very surreal。 A recluse called Mole who lives underground decides he needs some crew for his 'ship' which can become self supporting once the nuclear apocalypse happens。 From the very start he struggles to control what happens， who his crew might be， what they think should happen and what actually happens。 It felt like very little happened for a lot of the book， a number of characters tell strange anecdotes that go on for pages and then suddenly the characters seem to jump around。I did find the treatment of the girl irritating and the predicament of the junior high school girls very worrying。 I would be intrigued to read more Abe and see whether some of his other female characters are treated similarly。 Also there is a giant toilet。 Don't ask。 。。。more

«Sta prendendo un grosso abbaglio。 Se sarò io il comandante， questa diventerà un'arca ciliegio。 Senza bussole o carte nautiche。 Una nave che non navigherà， fingerà soltanto di navigare。»⁣⁣Abe Kōbō è noto per la sua scrittura fortemente surreale e per mettere in risalto il tema tipico degli scrittori del dopoguerra ovvero la crisi d’identità dell’uomo moderno e l’alienazione nella società; L’arca ciliegio non fa eccezione。⁣⁣Il protagonista di questo romanzo， chiamato “maiale” o “talpa” per il suo «Sta prendendo un grosso abbaglio。 Se sarò io il comandante， questa diventerà un'arca ciliegio。 Senza bussole o carte nautiche。 Una nave che non navigherà， fingerà soltanto di navigare。»⁣⁣Abe Kōbō è noto per la sua scrittura fortemente surreale e per mettere in risalto il tema tipico degli scrittori del dopoguerra ovvero la crisi d’identità dell’uomo moderno e l’alienazione nella società; L’arca ciliegio non fa eccezione。⁣⁣Il protagonista di questo romanzo， chiamato “maiale” o “talpa” per il suo aspetto fisico e per la sua indole sedentaria， è un misantropo paranoico che vive da anni in una cava di pietra piena di cunicoli e grande come una vera e propria città， che considera la sua Arca， nonché un rifugio antiatomico che lo salverà da un’imminente guerra nucleare。 Quando esce in superficie si porta dietro dei “biglietti per la sopravvivenza” alla ricerca di persone da imbarcare e riuscirà a convincerne tre， la cui vita è sempre stata condizionata dalla paura del pericolo della catastrofe nucleare， conseguenza della guerra fredda。⁣⁣La maggior parte del romanzo è infatti ambientata all’interno dell’arca/sotterraneo dove le azioni dei personaggi sfociano via via in situazioni sempre più bizzarre e al limite dell’assurdo， molto difficili da seguire anche per i lettori più attenti e già abituati allo stile antirealista， onirico e parodistico di Abe Kōbō dove tutto vuol dire più di quello che sembra， dove bisogna scavare in profondità e superare i deliranti dialoghi che pregnano il romanzo per capire appieno il messaggio dell’opera。⁣⁣Qui， infatti， il pericolo dell’olocausto atomico non è altro che una metafora letteraria per denunciare la rinascita dello spirito nazionalista giapponese， che aveva preso piede nel Giappone del dopoguerra con l’occupazione americana。 L’idea del rifugio antiatomico è infatti il prodotto di una filosofia della sopravvivenza di stampo fascista in quanto presuppone la scelta di chi deve sopravvivere e chi no， scelta che è proprio il protagonista a fare decidendo chi far imbarcare （e quindi chi salvare）。⁣All’interno dell’arca ognuno vive liberamente ma poi si sente la necessità di creare una struttura gerarchica e dare un ordine per sopravvivere: inizialmente è il protagonista il comandante， ma poi perde il controllo e un piccolo gruppo si impone assumendo il controllo assoluto dell’arca che diventa metafora di un piccolo stato。⁣ ⁣La posizione di Abe rispetto allo stato è tuttavia ambigua in quanto， nonostante il suo definirsi apolide e il fatto che appoggiasse le idee marxiste essendo critico nei confronti di tutti i tipi di organizzazione collettiva， in questo racconto， ammette che lo stato è necessario per un minimo di controllo e di mantenimento dell’ordine。⁣⁣Come già detto in precedenza， il romanzo è molto confusionario e all’insegna dell’assurdo， va letto con estrema attenzione e per capirlo è necessario aver studiato sia lo scrittore， sia il periodo storico e， nonostante io l’abbia fatto， mi sono persa più volte tra i dialoghi e sono rimasta infastidita dai continui commenti sessisti ed estremizzati che il protagonista fa nei confronti dell’unica donna presente sull’arca （anche se sono sicura che l’intento di Abe fosse proprio quello di delineare un personaggio così meschino e repellente）。 ⁣⁣Se c’è una cosa che però non mi delude mai di questo autore sono i finali sensazionali e aperti a mille profonde interpretazioni dove tutto diventa più chiaro e si capisce tutta la sua genialità。⁣⁣Quindi a chi consiglierei questo scrittore？ Sicuramente agli amanti del Murakami più assurdo e onirico （così capirete da chi ha preso ispirazione e vi meraviglierete scoprendo quante cose hanno in comune） ma non consiglierei quest’opera come primo approccio （provate più che altro con La donna di sabbia o Il quaderno canguro）。 Se vi ho incuriosito però sappiate che L’arca ciliegio， così come tipo tutti i suoi romanzi， è fuori catalogo e introvabile se non al prezzo di un rene + iva e nelle biblioteche ben fornite！ Piangete con me？⁣ 。。。more

may be partly fatigue but this was the least i've enjoyed a kobo abe yet。 paced just way too slow and essentially going nowhere - it doesn't help that this is the longest kobo abe i've read yet。 i had high hopes for the premise i think he could have done so much more with it but this feels like a great talent on disinterested autopilot knowing they'll publish and even sell whatever he can set to page。 it's just so many fucking miles from woman in the dunes or face of another， and though i can se may be partly fatigue but this was the least i've enjoyed a kobo abe yet。 paced just way too slow and essentially going nowhere - it doesn't help that this is the longest kobo abe i've read yet。 i had high hopes for the premise i think he could have done so much more with it but this feels like a great talent on disinterested autopilot knowing they'll publish and even sell whatever he can set to page。 it's just so many fucking miles from woman in the dunes or face of another， and though i can see the writer who did this in secret rendezvous and box man， and a little less so in man without a map those have either thru lines that keep them exciting （plotting！） or a kind of constant reinvention and recorrection within the space of their surrealism that keeps things fluid and advancing。 this book spends 200 pages showing three guests around the front rooms of a bunker and proposing they build some kind of society together and then 100 pages with a leg stuck in a toilet while far off unseen and mostly inexplicable possibly hostile forces may or may not close in around them。 that might sound cool and funny and avant garde on paper （i guess writing is all on paper， shit） but it doesn't read real well。 don't get me wrong it's not altogether awful， and even now after just finishing it to think that someone wrote a book where the last 1/3 or 100 pages is spent with a fat guy's leg stuck down a toilet puts a smile on my face。 kobo abe's still my boy but this one was rough going。 。。。more

به نظرم کتاب بیشتر از هرچیز درباره ی نجات و مفهوم اون در نگاه آدم های متفاوته که قطعا درک و پیشینه و نگاه های متفاوتی دارن。 به سبک آبه، ناامیدی او از بشریت و پیش‌بینی تغییر قطعی آدمها در شرایط مختلف رو در داستان می‌بینیم。 این که آدم ها عوض میشن。。بسته به شرایط بی رحم و خبیث و خطرناک میشن، بخصوص وقتی پای قدرت بی حساب و کتاب و اسلحه و زن به میون میاد。 داستان بر خلاف ظاهر فانتزی ش به شدت واقع گرایانه س و همین قوی و پرکشش و جذابش میکنه。 ترجمه هم روون و خوبه。 به نظرم ارزش وقت گذاشتن داره。

The Ark Sakura follows a man， who refers to himself as The Mole due to his burly， short stature and the fact that his habitation is in the tunnels under a large mountain， who finds himself entangled with an insect dealer and two shills/sakuras - people who are in the business of attracting customers to businesses in their own discreet ways。 He's sorta looking for passengers to join him in his mountain ark should the world come to an end， but they'd have to be worthy of the position。 The three pe The Ark Sakura follows a man， who refers to himself as The Mole due to his burly， short stature and the fact that his habitation is in the tunnels under a large mountain， who finds himself entangled with an insect dealer and two shills/sakuras - people who are in the business of attracting customers to businesses in their own discreet ways。 He's sorta looking for passengers to join him in his mountain ark should the world come to an end， but they'd have to be worthy of the position。 The three people that he meets in the same day weren't the people he was expecting， but turned out to surprise him in different ways。There isn't a pointed direction that the book heads in for the first half， and by the second half， it almost seems like everything is happening too much at once。 The dynamics between the characters are somewhat comedically antagonizing and sometimes bleh （just imagine uninhibited men talking to a woman without any backlash）， but it makes for an interesting proposal on what could happen by the end of the book。 If it were a movie， I'd watch it。 。。。more

This book started weirdly interesting （Japanese， what can you expect） and funny， but I think it grossly lost its charm on the way。 I struggled to finish it， and although it had subtle， intelligent messages through it， eventually I did not get much out of it。

I wanted to like this book。 But it was just weird。The setting is cool but the characters are odd and the whole thing feels claustrophobic。 There are plenty of other Japanese authors that you can sink your teeth into。

The typical Abe elements are here -- the story marching to its own strange but consistent logic， the weird scientific asides， the nameless characters。 But this one does it really well， while being quite funny， and pulling off the eroticism （which most of these avant garde books seem to try） with more success than is typical。 I dug up the old Times review that was published when this book came out and it says you can't tell the book is Japanese because it's so universal。 I really don't think that The typical Abe elements are here -- the story marching to its own strange but consistent logic， the weird scientific asides， the nameless characters。 But this one does it really well， while being quite funny， and pulling off the eroticism （which most of these avant garde books seem to try） with more success than is typical。 I dug up the old Times review that was published when this book came out and it says you can't tell the book is Japanese because it's so universal。 I really don't think that's true; the book strikes me as distinctly Japanese。 But I could see how it works without any of that background knowledge and， after all， the characters are largely unnamed。 。。。more

Imagine the weirdness of Murakami combined with the ambiguity of Beckett， but not quite as engaging as either。 The story drags on a little and belabors certain themes （like toilets， waste， and general scatological grotesquery）， but there are some notable concepts that stand out as more memorable than the surrounding story。 Among them is the eupcaccia， or clockbug， a fictional insect that has no legs and subsists entirely on its own dung。 It lives its entire life moving in a circle， rocking itsel Imagine the weirdness of Murakami combined with the ambiguity of Beckett， but not quite as engaging as either。 The story drags on a little and belabors certain themes （like toilets， waste， and general scatological grotesquery）， but there are some notable concepts that stand out as more memorable than the surrounding story。 Among them is the eupcaccia， or clockbug， a fictional insect that has no legs and subsists entirely on its own dung。 It lives its entire life moving in a circle， rocking itself back and forth， so in time with the movement of the sun that it can be used to tell the time。 One half of the circle is marked with its discharged waste， which it later consumes as it comes back around。It's an idea that is strangely fascinating as it is disgusting; like the main character you just can't seem to stop thinking about it。 It works well with the overall plot （which involves surviving in a bomb shelter） as well as an independent metaphor for modern life in general， in a vaguely Kafkaesque way。 Certain ideas from SF stories seem to take on a life of their own （at least for me） in how interesting they are apart from their stories， whether those stories are good or bad。 Ice-nine， grokking， etc。--I will remember these bits and pieces long after I've forgotten their context。 I feel like the eupcaccia can be added to that list。Abe also does some interesting work with the concept of space。 Most of the story takes place in a vast， underground quarry converted into a fallout shelter。 While meticulously described， it has bizarre features， like a gigantic toilet with suction so powerful it almost kills a man who falls into it。 It reminded me a little of "the Hatch" from LOST; menacing in its mysteriousness。 In addition there is commentary on some social changes and upheaval specific to Japan， like hikikomori， a rapidly increasing elderly population， roving gangs of disaffected youth， etc。 Abe is more subtle I think in his presentation of these issues， which is not a problem if you are familiar with them。 If not， you may wonder what function or purpose some of the characters serve。 Overall I wish I could give some of these separate elements four stars， with the narrative itself being three。 I know that sounds odd， but I really felt more drawn to the ideas themselves than to the story as it unfolded， which sometimes faltered in holding my attention。 This is the first of Abe's books I've read， and I was excited to pick him up since I don't know of many Japanese SF writers。 I look forward to reading some of his better known books， including "Woman in the Dunes" （which was made into a movie）， and "Inter Ice Age 4。" 。。。more
